Example Problem
The example grid is shown in Figure D1. The flow enters on the left and exits to the
right. The 2,000-ft (610-m)-long model is supercritical at both boundaries, so all infor-
mation is specified at the upstream end. The example contains a transition from a 100-ft
(30.5-m) width to a 90-ft (27.4-m) width. The slope is 0.01 except in the 100-ft (30.5-m)
length of transition, where it is 0.02. The transition is to have a bed roughness higher than
the rest of the model. The model includes a 50-ft (15.2-m)-long by 18-ft (5.5-m)-wide
bridge pier. Note that the resolution is concentrated around and downstream of any
abrupt changes (Figure D2). Since this flow is supercritical, all information including
shocks and rough conditions is swept downstream. Therefore, this is where the resolution
is needed.
