Construction and Rehabilitation History
1979
The 1,690-ft-long armor stone and dolosse-armored main breakwater
and 220-ft-long armor stone stub breakwater were completed in
January (Figure 2 ) The dolosse-armored portion of the main
breakwater was model tested (Bottin, Chatham, and Carver 1976) for
a design breaking wave height of 1 . ft in a water depth of

1 ft.

Inspection of the structure revealed that 203 of the 6,633 dolosse

originally placed were broken. It is estimated that 47 of these
were broken and left in place during construction.

Inspection subsequent to Hurricane Iwa of November 23 revealed no
additional breakage of dolosse, but it is thought that a section
may have slumped slightly.
