A s u r v e y r e v e a l e d t h a t t h e e a s t j e t t y had s u f f e r e d severe damage.
1956
C a p s t o n e s and s l o p e s t o n e s had s l i p p e d and were d i s a r r a n g e d i n nu-
merous s p o t s . Core s t o n e s were washed o u t i n several p l a c e s . Cap-
s t o n e s and c o r e s t o n e s were washed o u t i n f o u r l o c a t i o n s t o t a l i n g
150 f t . The o u t e r 250 f t o f the j e t t y was p a r t l y washed o u t . Beach
and d u n e s a d j a c e n t t o t h e j e t t y e r o d e d , and waves r o d e o v e r t h e d u n e s
and f l a n k e d t h e j e t t y . The west j e t t y was i n f a i r c o n d i t i o n w i t h
minor s l i p s and d i s a r r a n g e m e n t i n f i v e s p o t s . The i n l e t was i n a
s h o a l c o n d i t i o n . Most o f t h e damage was due t o a h u r r i c a n e i n 1954.
The west j e t t y was r e c o n s t r u c t e d by r e s e t t i n g c a p s t o n e s t o o r i g i n a l
1982
d e s i g n geometry o v e r 170 f t . A 1 , 4 7 0 - f t - l o n g p i l e c r i b r e v e t m e n t on
t h e n o r t h end o f t h e west j e t t y was r e p l a c e d by a rubble-mound j e t t y .
A s u r v e y r e v e a l e d t h a t t h e r e c o n s t r u c t e d p o r t i o n of t h e west j e t t y
1985
was i n good c o n d i t i o n . The seaward 200
o f t h e west j e t t y had
u n r a v e l e d and c a p s t o n e s were s c a t t e r e d . The west j e t t y head had n o t
m a i n t a i n e d d e s i g n c o n f i g u r a t i o n . S t o n e s on t h e i n l e t s i d e o f t h e
e a s t j e t t y had s l o u g h e d i n some s e c t i o n s , b u t s t o n e s on t h e beach
s i d e had r e t a i n e d t h e i r o r i g i n a l p o s i t i o n . Two areas on t h e n o r t h e r n
end were c o m p l e t e l y d e t e r i o r a t e d . E r o s i o n o f s a n d c a u s e d u n d e r m i n i n g
o f t h e east j e t t y w i t h c o n t i n u a l l o s s o f sand undermining i t f u r t h e r .
