STRUCTURES AND VEGETATION
While vegetation is one means of controlling shoreline erosion, its most serious deficiency is its
restriction to areas of limited fetch because it cannot establish itself in heavy wave environments. By
placing it in the shelter of a structure such as a breakwater, however, vegetation can be used in areas
experiencing considerably heavier wave activity. The use of a temporary structure is particularly
appealing because it protects the plants while they become established and it can be removed when the
plant mature.
