Project: Los Angeles County Drainage Area (LACDA)
PI: Chuck Tate
Branch/Group: Inland Hydraulic Structures Branch, Environmental Hydraulics Group
Project Description/Activities/Capabilities:
The Los Angeles County Drainage Area (LACDA) model study included approximately 20 miles
of the Rio Hondo and the Los Angeles River downstream of Whitter Narrows Dam. Of 27 bridges
identified by numerical analysis during the Feasibility Study as needing to be replaced, 21 bridges
were saved due to the physical model study for a saving of over 0 million. This saving was
the result of identifying bridges that could safely pass the new design flow and developing
modifications to other bridges to safely pass the flow. Five models were used to reproduce the
entire length with the longest model being 630 ft.
